Steeleville Legion stays hot, downing Murphysboro 6-1

Murphysboro became the latest victim of the Steeleville Senior Legion baseball team June 23.

Scoreless after one inning, Steeleville erupted for five runs in the second on doubles by Ryan Vogt, Gavin Conway and AJ Stearns, along with a two-run home run from Dusty Sutton.

Steeleville added another run in the fourth and allowed only one Murphysboro run on the day to go on to a 6-1 victory.

Owen Gross, Jordan Wilson and Stearns combined to slow down Murphysboro. Sutton and Conway each went 2 for 3 with 2 RBI. Wilson, Vogt, Bradley Mevert and Stearns each contributed with hits.

Steeleville improved to 9-1.

Steeleville hosted New Athens for a senior legion baseball game. New Athens ran into a Steeleville team that is playing well with solid pitching. Nathan Parkinson took his turn for Steeleville on the mound and shut down New Athens. Parkinson tossed seven innings allowing two hits, walking four and striking out six earning a complete-game shutout.

Owen Gross led the hitting attack for Steeleville going 4 for 4, scoring three runs with two doubles, a stolen base and two RBI. Dusty Sutton was 3 for 4 with two runs scored. Ryan Vogt and Bradley Mevert each went 2 for 4 with a run scored with Mevert also having a stolen base and an RBI.

Jordan Wilson and Parkinson each had one hit and one RBI. Steeleville cruised to a 7-0 win to improve to 8-1 on the season.
