Costello Lock and Dam to limit hours during repairs

KASKASKIA - The Kaskaskia River Project - Critical maintenance work of the Jerry F. Costello Lock and Dam and the unwatering of the lock chamber will result in the following reduced hours of operation and lock closures.

June 25-29: Closed 6 a.m.-6 p.m. to all traffic, the lock will be available 6 p.m.-6 a.m.

July 2-4: Closed 6 a.m.-6 p.m. to all traffic, the lock will be available 6 p.m.-6 a.m.

July 9-20: Closed 24 hours to all traffic.

July 26-29: Closed 6 a.m.-6 p.m. to all traffic, the lock will be available 6 p.m.-6 a.m.

July 30-Aug. 19: Closed 24 hours to all traffic.

The unwatering of the lock chamber in August will be the first in the project's history, allowing inspections of the structure and critical repairs to be completed. Other work includes mechanical dredging, diving operations for inspections of the lock bulkhead slots and PLC upgrades to the lock control system.

Recreational boaters are encouraged to plan accordingly as access to and from the Mississippi River will be limited through late August when maintenance is completed. The weekend prior to and following the July Fourth holiday will not be affected as the lock will be open to all traffic and operating on regularly scheduled hours. However, reduced hours will be in place July 2- 4.

The first full closure of the season will begin July 9. The upstream and downstream boat ramps will not be affected and will remain available for river access.
