Du Quoin students learn about sculpture in summer class

DU QUOIN - Learning architecture as sculpture is how instructor Larry Alvarado described the weeklong summer class at Du Quoin Elementary School attended by 12 students.

Students were busy with a variety of sculptures. Some were involved with papier mache. Some were trying out balloon art. Others designed cardboard houses and yet others used juice boxes and paper.

"It's representation art vs. abstract," Alvarado said. "And it's all part of an academic enrichment series for the kids this summer. I have had camps on rockets, Legos and now sculpture."
