The Astronomical Association of Southern Illinois will hold its next "Wine Under the Stars" event tonight, Sept. 21 at Blue Sky Vineyard. From 6 to 10 p.m., local astronomers will have telescopes on hand to take in a range of solar system sights, including Venus, Mars, Saturn and Jupiter.

AES Solar and the Carbondale Chamber of Commerce will play host to a ribbon cutting at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 5 at Gaia House Interfaith Center in Carbondale to commemorate the commissioning of a new solar power system donated and installed by AES Solar. The installation was part of a solar installation course through John A. Logan College and was performed by JALC students and AES Solar staff in June.

The Carbondale Police Department is looking for volunteers this Halloween. From 4 to 8 p.m. that evening, the police department will sponsor the "Pumpkin Patrol," just as it has each year since 1992. Volunteers wearing orange safety vests and driving vehicles bearing the "Pumpkin Patrol" logo will patrol areas of our community where kids participate in trick-or-treating. A free showing of the Disney/Pixar film "The Incredibles 2" will take place at 6:45 p.m. Sept. 28 at Saluki Stadium.

The Strong Survivors Yard Sale, which supports the free program co-sponsored by the SIU Department of Kinesiology and the SIH Cancer Institute, will take place from 7 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 22 at Grand Avenue Baptist Church in Carterville. The program utilizes exercise as a therapeutic tool to help cancer survivors and caregivers get through the treatment and recovery process.

Underway this weekend at SIU's Touch of Nature Environmental Center is Camp Beta, an overnight camp for youth ages 9 to 15 with type 1 diabetes. Activities for campers include hiking, fishing, arts and crafts, ziplining, team-building exercises, horseback riding and more. Camp BETA is sponsored by Touch of Nature, Southern Illinois Healthcare, the Diabetes Resource Team and the Lions Club of Carbondale.</group><group id="82A97A80-235D-4178-B437-2CE44469A866" type="seoLabels">
