Need to get rid of a few things? Clean out your closets, garages, sheds and cluttered spaces and try to sell it from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 1 at the Jackson County Housing Center, located at 207 N. The Neighborhood Co-op Grocery on Thursday presented a $3,800 check to Good Samaritan House of Carbondale, using proceeds from the Feed Your Neighbor 5K Run/Walk held April 26 at Turley Park.

The Peace Coalition of Southern Illinois/FOR Monthly Vigil for Peace and Justice will be held from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 1 at the corner of Illinois Avenue and Main Street in Carbondale. The Peace Coalition monthly meeting will follow at Cristaudo's Café and Bakery. All are invited to attend.

Summer Family-Style Story Times will meet at the Carbondale Public Library at 10 a.m. Tuesday mornings June 18 through July 23. No registration is needed, and the events are open to kids up through first grade.

The Newell House surprised Carbondale last weekend by announcing that the popular eatery will close its doors Wednesday, June 5. In an update, the Newell House says it will offer its regular menu through Sunday, June 2, with specials making up the food selection through the rest of the restaurant's run. The Grotto Lounge will remain open through Friday, June 7.

Najjar Abdul Musawwir, a professor in SIU's School of Art and Design, presented a lecture Thursday at the University of Warsaw's American Studies Center in Poland. Musawwir's topic was "From Africa to America: A Visual Artist Aesthetic Reaction to the Banjo."

A massive community yard sale is planned for 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 8 at the R. Buckminster Fuller Dome Home, located at the corner of Cherry Street and Forest Avenue.

Erica Jones of Carbondale has been named to the 2019 spring dean's list at Ohio Dominican University. To be on the dean's list, a student must have a grade-point average of 3.5 or better during the semester.

DePauw University's commencement was held May 19. Among the more than 500 receiving degrees were two from Carbondale: Lauren Butler, who was awarded a BA in biochemistry; and Samantha Goodale, receiving a BA in economics. Butler and Goodale also were named to the spring dean's list at DePauw, along with fellow Carbondale students Hannah Baker and Mary Goodale.

Kimberlyn Gayle Massey, a senior from Carbondale, was named to the spring dean's list at Western Illinois University.
