Carbondale man gets six years for invasion

A Carbondale man has been sentenced to six years in prison for a 2017 home invasion.

State's Attorney Mike Carr says DeShawn Matthews, 25, pleaded guilty Tuesday to the crime, which took place shortly before 7 a.m. Nov. 26, 2017.

At that time, Carr says, the resident of an apartment located on Oak Street in Carbondale opened the door to leave for work and found Matthews standing directly outside. Matthews pushed the resident back inside and rushed into the residence while carrying a stick or club in his hand. Upon hearing screams, another resident within the home awakened, and Matthews fled. Matthews was apprehended by the Carbondale Police Department later that morning.

His incarceration is to be followed by a three-year period of mandatory supervised release. Former Assistant State's Attorney Casey E.A. Bloodworth and Assistant State's Attorney Rebecca L. Blomer were responsible for the prosecution.
