Rippelmeyer-Tippy to speak at Learning in Retirement meeting

CARBONDALE - Kay Rippelmeyer-Tippy will be the featured speaker March 20 at the Southern Illinois Learning in Retirement meeting to be held at 10:30 a.m. at Grace United Methodist Church in Carbondale (220 N. Tower Road).

Rippelmeyer-Tippy will discuss "The Four Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Camps of Jackson County." The camps existed between 1933 and 1942 and were located in Ava, Murphysboro, Pomona, and Giant City. She will illustrate her presentation with photographs and with the words of CCC enrollees whom she interviewed. She will also discuss the CCC's national context and its legacy as part of the New Deal.

Rippelmeyer-Tippy earned a bachelor's degree in English Education from the University of Illinois and a master's degree in Literature from Southern Illinois University. She began interviewing CCC enrollees in the 1980s.

The meeting is free and open to the public. A coffee and social hour will begin at 9:30 a.m.
