DHS girls relay team leads in Bloomington, Sparta

DU QUOIN - Du Quoin High School's girls track team won the 4x400 relay at the Illinois Top Times Championship in Bloomington, and placed first in more than a dozen events at the Sparta Coed.

Indoors at Illinois Wesleyan University's Shirk Center, Gabrielle Alongi, Grace Alongi, Jalynn Wood and Olivia Phillips passed the baton for a first-place finish in the 4x400 with a time of 4:13.95.

Bailey Harsy, Phillips, Ayanna Dunklin and Madison Davis medaled second in the 4x200 at 1:50.26 while third place in the 4x800 went to the quartet of the Alongis, Phillips and Jacqueline Crain at 10:04.14.

Junior Gabrielle Alongi placed fourth in the 800 meters at 2:24.62, with freshman Grace Alongi four places behind at 2:26.22.

Senior Madison Davis placed eighth in the 60-meter dash at 8.14 seconds. She had run 8.10 for an eighth-place finish in the premlinaries, followed in ninth by the junior, Harsy, at 8.21. Davis placed 12th in the 200 meter at 27.34.

Freshman Maddie Decker was in 14th place in the 3200 with a time of 13:21.19, while the 60-meter hurdle prelims had 10th and 12th-place finishes for the freshman, Wood, at 9.86 seconds and Harsy at 9.95.

Coach Shane Boyett said the indoor season went well for the girls, starting with a win at the Marion Indoor meet against several 2A and 3A schools.

"Our relays ran very well with all of them placed in the top three at Top Times," Boyett said. "Hopefully, it's an indicator that we can be competitive and place high at the IHSA state meet at the end of the season. Although we've run very well, I still think there is room for improvement."

Boyett said athletes to watch for this season will include junior Gabrielle Alongi in the 800 and 400 runs; Davis in the 100 and 200; Harsy in the long jump and 100-meter hurdles; and Elizabeth Bird in the high jump.

"We also have several freshmen and sophomores that will also contribute heavily," he said

Best in Sparta

Outdoors on March 19 at the Sparta Coed, the girls varsity squad bested a field of three, with 269.5 points, versus Sparta with 171.5 and Okawville's 83.

The Indians were in first place in the 100-meter and 300-meter hurdles, the 100, 400, 800 and 1600, the relays, shot put, pole vault, high jump, long jump and triple jump.

Jaylyn Wood won both the 100-meter and 300-meter hurdles, with recorded times of 16.08 and 51.50 seconds. Harsy was in second in the 100 hurdles at 17.50 followed by Tottionna Lloyd in third at 17.61.

Lloyd also placed third in the 300-meter hurdles at 59.50.

In the 100 meters, Davis was first with a season best time of 13.40 seconds.

Freshman Ella Brock headed the field of seventh through 10th place at 14.81, followed by Brazil Irving at 15.24, Tequlia Rose following at 15.64 and Harsy at 16.08.

Phillips was first in the 400 meters with a time of 1:04.16, while Grace Alongi and Crain were first and second in the 800 at 2:33.36 and 2:43.00.

Decker was first in the 1600 meter run at 6:11.83 and classmate Alexis George was in fourth behind two Sparta Bulldogs at 7:37.56.

Du Quoin took first, third and fourth place in the four-team 4x100 relay, with first taken by the foursome of Harsy, Harris, Dunklin and Davis at 51.05.

Third went to Melania Webb, Lloyd, Olivia James and Brock at 55.77 followed by Rose, Irving, Savannah Williams and Taylor Simmons at 1:08.93.

Harsy, Harris, Dunklin and Davis finished at 1:51.74 to defeat Sparta and Okawville in the 4x200.

Wood, Phillips, Crain and Grace Alongi turned in a time of 4:32.87 to win the 4x400 while Phillips, Crain, Decker and Grace Alongi placed first in the 800 relay at 10:30.99.

First through third in the high jump were secured by Du Quoin with Elizabeth Bird clearing 4 feet, 10 inches.

Dearmond was next at 4-8 and freshman Jordan Stanhouse checked in at 4-6.

Harsey was first in the long jump with a vault of 15-1. James was tied for fourth at 13-7.

Sophomore Delanie Dearmond was first in the triple jump at 30 feet, 7.50 inches.

Seven of the 11 shot putters were from Du Quoin, led by freshman Marcie Dunmyer with a personal record of 32-7.

Classmate Adiana Stewart with another personal record of 31-05.00 and sophomore Aubrey Barwick followed at 29-5.00.

Seniors Carlie Schubert and Zoe Stroud were in fifth and was seventh at 26-11.50 and 24-0.50.

Freshman Klohe Stroud was in 11th at 18-5.

Barwick took second in the discus with a throw of 93 feet, 5 inches while freshman Addi Darnell was in fourth at 61-7.

The pole vault had a total of two competitors - both Indians - sophomore Maddie Robison finishing first at 8-6 and Wood second at 8-3.
