District 95 starts year with new principals

The new school year at Carbondale Elementary School District 95 dawns with several new faces and positions on the administrative and teaching levels.

Among the new staff are principals Carla Ehlers, heading Parrish Elementary School (pre-K to first grade); and Zachary Schumacher, leading Thomas Elementary School (second and third grades).

Ehlers is entering her 14th year as a school principal, having served most recently as principal of the Gen. John A. Logan Attendance Center in Murphysboro. Prior to that, she spent eight years in the classroom as a teacher.

Ehlers earned a bachelor degree in special education and elementary education from SIU and a masters in administration from Eastern Illinois University.

Schumacher has 13 years in education, including stints in Cairo and Mt. Vernon. Schumacher spent a lot of time in Carbondale, where his father worked at SIU and his mother at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.
