PANTHERS WIN SIRR TOURNEY

CARTERVILLE - The Pinckneyville Panthers volleyball team won its first Southern Illinois River-to-River Conference Preview Tournament on Saturday at Carterville, defeating Massac County in the championship match, 27-25, 28-26.

The Panthers had previously defeated defending champ Nashville, 25-18, 27-25 in the Gold Division of pool play, winning over A-J, Herrin, and Murphysboro in their pool, all in two-set matches.

Pinckneyville, under head coach Cathy Kohnen, have only two seniors on the roster, but the consistent setting of Elaine Shaneyfelt and the defensive expertise of Macy Epplin provide a steady influence for the young Panthers, who often have three freshmen on the court: Jillian Shaneyfelt, Emily Ruppert, and Addie Waggoner.

The improved front row play of juniors Payton Morgan and Bella Pasquino, and sophomore Lily Tanner all added much to secure the championship, with junior Grace Numi playing a consistent back row, as well.

Another solid front-line player, sophomore Kassidy Lee, was out with an injury, making the Panthers' win even more impressive.

Pinckneyville volleyball will play in the Marissa Tournament this week.
