Valeta June Brothers of rural Carrier Mills

Valeta June Brothers, age 90, of rural Carrier Mills died at 6:05 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 15, 2019 in the Carrier Mills Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born on June 8, 1929 in Williamson County, Illinois to the late Oscar and Billie J. Gallimore Fischer. She married Harold (Jack) Brothers on June 8, 1947 and they had 63 years of married life before Jack passed away on Dec. 28, 2010. She was an active member of Carrier Mills First Baptist Church until her health prevented her from attending. She and Jack both taught Sunday school for many years. She last worked at the former Starkey's Market in Carrier Mills. She, like many, was also a dog lover.

She leaves a son, Danny (Sherry) Brothers of Quincy and a daughter Anita (Ted) Layman of Carrier Mills; six grandchildren, Scottie (Brandi) Layman of Carrier Mills, Zach (Randi) Layman of Carrier Mills, Kari (Josh) Hedges of Carrier Mills, Jeff Brothers of Overland Park, Kansas, Dana (Brad) Renfrow of Quincy and David Brothers of Oregon; nine great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and a sister, Kathleen McNew.

Funeral services for Valeta will be held at 11 a.m. today, Tuesday Sept. 17, 2019 in the Absher-Nicholson Funeral Home in Carrier Mills. The Rev. Scott Johnson will officiate and burial will follow in Salem Cemetery. Family and friends may visit at Absher-Nicholson after 9 a.m. today. Memorials maybe made to Hospice of Southern Illinois in her memory. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
