Sacred Heart Church to host chicken & dumpling dinner
DU QUOIN - Gearing up for crisp autumn days means football games, fall festivals and the second annual Sacred Heart Church Chicken and Dumpling Dinner fundraiser. This year's event is set for Haffner Hall from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 6. Mass precedes the luncheon at 10 a.m.
Since grilling season has almost ended, it is time for homemade comfort food served family style; all-you-can-eat, in a comfortable family setting. The menu of slaw, corn, green beans and chicken and dumplings is a favorite meal of many area residents. There will also be sweet rolls, homemade desserts and drinks.
This year's dinner coordinator, Debbie Mannino, said the parish is preparing more meals this time around.
"Because we never want to run out," she said. "We anticipate big crowds and we are ready for them."
Liz Wynn said she will purchase 360 pounds of chicken thighs and 100 pounds of chicken breasts to cook, debone and add to the rich dumplings.
"It's love at first bite," Wynn said.
If you have been to the Sacred Heart Lenten fish frys, you have indulged in the famous homemade desserts. Those same recipes will be used at the Oct. 6 dinner and will feature pies, cakes, cupcakes, cookies and more.
Tickets may be purchased in advance or at the door for $10 (adults) or $5 for children ages 6-10. Children under 6 eat free if they dine inside the church. Adult only carryout dinners are available at the south entrance door. There will be no call-in orders or container sales.
