Have you heard? There’s going to be an eclipse on April 8, and the eyes of the world will be on Carbondale. So, let’s make a good impression!

In an effort to give visitors the best first impression of Carbondale possible, Keep Carbondale Beautiful is coordinating several clean-ups before the eclipse and is encouraging everyone to do their part and pick-up around town before the big day.

If you want to join a big group of like-minded citizens for a clean-up, come to Attucks Park at 9 a.m. Saturday, March 30. Keep Carbondale Beautiful is teaming up with Green Earth Inc. for a big, joint clean-up around town.

Volunteers will gather at the Attucks Park "picnic pavilion" and choose to either help Green Earth with a clean-up in and around their Pyles Creek Preserve or be assigned an area to clean up further afield in Carbondale. Volunteers will be provided with gloves and trash bags. And please remember to wear closed-toe shoes.

Several student groups will also be cleaning-up in early April, including the SIU School of Medicine class of 2027 and the ladies of Gamma Phi Omega. Members of those groups emailed Keep Carbondale Beautiful (, and arrangements were made for them to get gloves, bags and trash grabbers in advance of their clean-ups.

Adopt-a-Spot groups are also being encouraged to pick-up their areas before the eclipse. There are well over a dozen areas that are regularly picked-up and we are always looking for new groups to adopt spots. If you are interested in adopting a spot, please send us an email.

Finally, there are trash bags and gloves available 24/7 on the screened-in porch at Hickory Lodge at 1115 W. Sycamore St. So, grab some bags and gloves, and then pick-up wherever in town.

And any time you are out and about doing your part to keep Carbondale beautiful, take a moment to snap a picture or two and, you guessed it, send it to us in an email. We love to post those kinds of pictures for everyone to see.
