City hires Rob Miller as fire chief

The city of Carbondale has a new fire chief.

Outgoing city manager Gary Williams recently announced that Rob Miller has been selected to lead the city's fire department.

Miller has worked for the city for the past 25 years. He began his public safety career as a police officer for the Village of DeSoto, where he served three years before transitioning to the Carbondale Fire Department in 1998. In 2006, he became an arson investigator and has continued to investigate fires for the past 18 years. Prior to his promotion to captain in 2018, Miller was the president of firefighters union Local 1961.

Miller was promoted again in 2018 to assistant fire chief.

Miller will begin his new role on April 15. He will lead the development of a $4 million annual budget.
