Frances E. Vaughn, formerly of DeSoto

Frances E. Vaughn, 97, of Mt. Morris, Ill., passed away May 8, 2025, at Allure of Pinecrest Memory Care.

She was born Dec. 29, 1927, in DeSoto to Lee and Carrie Myers McKinney. The family later moved to a farm North of Carbondale known as the Glade School District. There she attended the one-room Glade School. Frances graduated from Carbondale Community High School in 1945. She attended Southern Illinois University for two years.

She worked for Prairie Farms Creamery and was active in 4-H and Rural Youth Group, where she met the love of her life, Venus Vaughn (better known as “Lefty” to all his friends). Lefty and Frances were married Sept. 7, 1947, in Carbondale.

Her survivors include three children, Janice Olson of Champaign, Patricia (Garth) Thomas of Oregon, Ill., and Gordon Vaughn of Mt. Morris; granddaughters Christine Olson (Josh) Uhl of South Orange, N.J., Anne Olson (James) Bell of Indianapolis, Ind., Jennifer Olson (Evan) Parker of New York, N.Y., Terry (Christiopher) Remhof of Byron, Ill., and Reanna (Chuck) Brant of Chatsworth, Ga.; sisters Mary Marolda of Las Vegas, Nev., Janet (Morris) McDaniel and Grace Herring, all of Carbondale, Karen (Gary) Steele of Colorado Springs, Colo., Donna (David) Stull and Debbie (Danny) Piquard, all of Murphysboro; brother Richard McKinney (Lois) of Carterville; sister-in-law Sarah McKinney of Carterville; brother-in-law Richard Rushing of Paducah, Ky.; 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by husband, Venus; her parents and grandparents; sisters Bonnie Waller and husband Don of Colorado, Norma Habbe and husband Ralph of Illinois, and Margaret (Richard) Rushing of Kentucky; brothers Clancy McKinney and wife Dee of Georgia; George McKinney of Illinois; son-in-law Charles Olson of Illinois; brothers-in-law Ron Herring of Illinois and Frank Marolda of Nevada; grandson Andy Vaughn of Illinois; and daughter-in-law Marcia Vaughn of Illinois.

There will be a graveside service on Sunday, Aug. 31 at 11 a.m. at McKinney Hill Cemetery in Carbondale. A reception will follow at the Field of Dreams, 145 Lexi Ln., DeSoto.
