Velma Toedte

Velma Toedte, age 96, of Pinckneyville, Ill., passed away on Thursday, Jan. 29, 2015 at 10:24 a.m. in Pinckneyville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Pinckneyville, Ill.

Velma was born on Jan. 20, 1919 in Nashville, Ill., a daughter to Stephen and Edna (Lemons) Scronce. On Jan. 1, 1942, she married Harold Toedte in the Methodist Church in Rogers Park, Chicago, Ill., and he preceded her in death on Nov. 7, 2006. She had worked as a beautician for Elizabeth Arden, Chicago, Ill., doing hair for several celebrities including Joan LeFort- Kennedy and other Kennedy family members. She also owned and operated her own salon called the Pink Poodle in Pinckneyville, Ill. She was a member of the former E&R Church now know as St. Paul United Church of Christ, Pinckneyville, Ill. She and her husband had lived in Pinckneyville, Ill. since 1964 where they enjoyed growing and selling strawberries. She loved spending time with her nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and loved dogs, especially poodles.

Survivors include three nieces, Catherine Thomas, Lucille Redford, Jenetta (Kenneth) Holt; six great-nieces and great-nephews, Doug (Toni) Thomas, Pam (Louis) Hottes, Linda Poos, Rhonda (Aric) Harsy, Steven (Amanda) Holt and Sharon (Jon) Young and a host of great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; three sisters, Helen (Ed) Tielemann, Ruth (Calvin) Knapp and Lillie (Edwin) Jones; two brothers in infancy; nephews, Gene Knapp and Bill Woodworth; nephew-in-law, Charles Thomas; nephew-in-law, Olin Redford; a great-niece, Terri Redford-Powers and a great-nephew in-law, Roger Poos.

Funeral services will be held at Pyatt Funeral Home, Pinckneyville, Ill. on Monday, Feb. 2, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Cindy Bean officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park, Du Quoin, Ill.

Friends may call at Pyatt Funeral Home, Pinckneyville, Ill. on Monday from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m.
