Dist. 300 K-8 maintenance supervisor David Martin to retire; two teachers reassigned in consolidation

The Du Quoin Board of Education Tuesday night accepted with regret a letter of intent to retire June 30, 2014 from eight-year K-8 maintenance supervisor David Martin.

Martin is a brother to educator and coach Al Martin. David Martin has had an outstanding career as mining supervisor, owner of the Farm Fresh store in Du Quoin and Dist. 300 maintenance supervisor. He was hired to fill the vacancy of Don Roznowski eight years ago.

The board re-employed all district non-certified support staff for the 2014-2015 school year. The Board re-assigned/transferred third grade teacher Jessica Craig to second grade and seventh grade social studies teacher Jason James to fifth grade as part of the district's deficit reduction initiative.

The board approved retired Du Quoin fire chief and outdoorsman Brett Crain as high school bass fishing team volunteer coach for the 2013-2014 school year.

The board approved the request of the high school FBLA sponsor for three students to attend the National FBLA competition in Nashville, Tenn.

The district will change eMail service providers over the summer with staff members' eMails ending in duquoinschools.org. Students will go to a g-mail system. Both will come with terms of use.

The board also heard an update on unpaid lunch charges in the district. At this time there are $5,500 in unpaid breakfast and lunch charges. This does not include those students eligible for free breakfast or lunch through the national school lunch program.

The board's attorney will be sending letters relative to the filing of court claims for the payment of these charges.
