Man who threatened officer gets prison time
A Carbondale man has been sentenced to four and a half years in prison for threatening a police officer and the officer's family following the man's arrest at a local laundromat.
State's Attorney Mike Carr says Daniel Robert Hamilton, 46, was sentenced to 54 months in the Illinois Department of Corrections after a jury found him guilty of threatening a public official and criminal trespass.
According to Carr, on the evening of Oct. 27, 2018, Carbondale police officers were dispatched to Main Street Laundry in Carbondale in reference to intoxicated individuals inside the business. Upon arrival, officers were advised by the manager that there were two individuals she wanted to leave the property. Officers approached the individuals and asked them to leave. One left without incident. The other individual, identified as Hamilton, refused to leave.
After several attempts to convince Hamilton to leave, officers placed him under arrest for criminal trespass. While Hamilton was being transported to the Jackson County Jail, he began to threaten the life of the transporting officer and the officer's family by claiming that he knew where the officer lived and that he would shoot him and members of his family at their home.
Following his release, Hamilton will be required to serve two years of supervised release.
One sentenced for aggravated battery
Carr also announced that Jewlious Causey, 27, of Carbondale has been sentenced to the Illinois Department of Corrections after pleading guilty to aggravated battery.
According to Carr, at around 2:30 a.m. March 17, Carbondale Police officers were on foot patrol in the area of 315 W. Walnut St., where a crowd of people had gathered at a business.
One of the individuals was Causey, who was on probation for a previous battery conviction and had active warrants pending out of Jackson County.
Officers approached Causey to place him under arrest for those warrants.
While attempting to arrest Causey, he resisted by pulling away, yelling profanities and spitting in the faces of two officers.
Causey was sentenced to three years, followed by two years of supervised release, on the felony charge.
