Logan Museum to host living history Sept. 28

The General John A. Logan Museum in Murphysboro will play host to "Work and Play 1840," a living history event, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28.

The day will feature the SIU Forestry Club, which will demonstrate axe throwing, cross cut sawing, underhand sawing, and splitting rails for fencing. Their shows run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every hour on the hour. There also will be walk-behind plowing demonstrated using a team of horses just like farmers in 1840 plowed. On site will be a blacksmith demonstration, quilting bee, weaving and spinning.

For the whole family there will be horse shoes, sack races, group spelling bees, and corn husk doll making. At 1 p.m., Eric Stahlheber of Southernwood Gardens will host a talk in Pat's Prairie about the care of fall gardens. At 2 p.m., everyone is invited to participate in the reenactment of the 1845 pioneer wedding of Diza Glen to Lindorf Ozburn. Glen was a Logan family member and lived in the Logan home along with John A. and his parents, Dr. John and Elizabeth Logan. The great-great-grandson of Diza and Lindorf will be attending the reenactment. Pioneer traditions will be observed with music provided by the Smoky Hollow String Band. Dancing will follow, as well as wedding cake made with Mary Todd Lincoln's recipe. Also, Hamp's Smoke N Q will be available.
