Extension to host seed workshop
The University of Illinois Extension will be hosting a seed collection workshop Nov. 7 at John A. Logan College. The workshop will cover a variety of topics including an overview of seed collecting practices, when and where to collect, as well other tips and tricks for successful seed collection.
Saving and conserving seeds from native plants can be a very rewarding and worthwhile practice, as well as a fun hobby. According to Horticulture Extension educator Austin Little, "saving seeds is a great way to promote indigenous, ecologically balanced habitats. By collecting seed from native plants, we increase our environmental stewardship and improve biodiversity in our landscapes."
The workshop will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Mees Center at John A. Logan College in Carterville. The center is located in the historic village at the southeast part of campus. The event is free and open to the public, but registration is required. To reserve a spot, contact Maggie Ray at 618-687-1727 or register online at go.illinois.edu/seedcollecting2019.
