Steeleville moves up to second in Class 1A
In the final Illinois Coaches Association poll of the season on May 8, Steeleville softball moved into No. 2 in the state in Class 1A.
The Lady Warriors (22-2) have only lost to Class 3A competition and after several weeks of being stuck at No. 5, they leapfrogged archrival Trico - which had previously been second.
"I told the girls the polls don't really matter, it's what you do in the postseason," said Steeleville coach Andy Gerlach. "Games win hardware, rankings don't."
The Pioneers (23-3) fell to fourth in Class 1A despite having not lost since dropping a 7-5 decision to Steeleville on April 10, a win streak of 11 games and counting.
Steeleville's Cahokia Conference Kaskaskia Division foe New Athens, which earned a No. 1 seed in the Marissa Sectional, is ranked 16th.
