Elmer E. Schafer
Elmer E. Schafer, 87, of Du Quoin, passed away at 7:10 A.M., Monday, July 27, 2015 at the Du Quoin Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Du Quoin.
Elmer had worked as a salesman for Fairmont Supply in Mt. Vernon. He had also been a manager at Rechters Store in Du Quoin, Turco, Phelps Dodge and KohlsdorfÃs. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Du Quoin. Elmer was a life member of the Du Quoin Elks and past State President of the Elks. He was a member of the Du Quoin Rotary and Du Quoin American Legion. He was a United States Navy veteran of World War II.
He was born October 23, 1927 at Oraville, IL, the son of Nickolaus and Edith (Blumenstock) Schafer.
He married Charlotte Jean Carter on June 18, 1952 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Du Quoin and she preceded him in death on November 12, 2007.
He is survived by one daughter - Vicki Kowzan of Du Quoin, one son - Gregory Schafer and wife Barb of Flora, IL, two sisters - Norma Fager of Murphysboro, IL and Clara Dublo of Sesser, IL, eleven grandchildren - Zach Schafer and wife Roni, Brittany Schafer, Ashley Schafer, Brett Hintz, Derek Hintz, Kurt Hintz, Kortney Hintz, Nick Schafer, Andrea Kowzan, Bethany Valier and husband Josh and Christa McIntire and husband Nolen and six great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and two sisters - Ernestine Schafer and Helen Stein.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 A.M., Friday, July 31, 2015 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Du Quoin with Fr. Joseph Oganda officiating.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 P.M., Thursday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.
An Elks Memorial Service will be at 7:00 P.M., Thursday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.
Rosary will be prayed at 9:20 A.M., Friday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.
Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Du Quoin V.F.W. and American Legion and the United States Navy.
Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery at Du Quoin.
Friends may make memorials to the Elks Crippled Children's Foundation and will be accepted at the funeral home.
