Feeling the glow Police, firefighters to pass out glow sticks on Halloween night
The Du Quoin Fire and Police departments will be handing out glow sticks to trick-or-treaters from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 31 in front of the Grand Theater on Main Street. Their effort is planned in conjunction with the city's new downtown trunk or treat event.
The glow sticks are being provided in an effort to increase visibility and safety and will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Du Quoin Fire Department Capt. Adam Hill says about 700 glow sticks will be available.
Also, the fire department is offering the following tips for safe trick-or-treating:
• Plan your route ahead of time.
• Trick or treat in familiar neighborhoods.
• Carry a flashlight with fresh batteries after dark.
• Take along a cellphone for emergencies.
• Always trick or treat in groups, accompanied by an adult.

• Don't approach unfamiliar pets and animals.
• Don't cut across yards, and stay out of backyards.
• Follow traffic signals, and don't jaywalk.
