Thomas Edward Morgan
Thomas Edward Morgan, 86, of Du Quoin, passed away peacefully at 6:45 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014 at the Carbondale Memorial Hospital after a long illness.
Tom had spent his life in Du Quoin as a small business loan agent as well as an insurance and real estate agent. He graduated from Du Quoin High School in 1945. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Tom served as Seaman First Class until his honorable discharge on Aug. 20, 1946. After he retired, he and his wife, Francie, opened and operated Francie's Bed and Breakfast for 12 years. He was a devoted member of the First Presbyterian Church of Du Quoin. He had served as a Deacon, Trustee and Elder of the church for many years. Tom had also been a Sunday School Teacher and Sunday School Superintendent. He served on the Executive Board for the Boy Scouts and he was a Cub Scout Master. Tom was a member for many years of the Du Quoin Rotary Club and was past President. He was also a member of the Du Quoin Chamber of Commerce. Tom was past President of the Kiwanis Club of Anna, Ill.. He was a member of the Du Quoin Elks Lodge and was past Exalted Ruler.
He was born Sept. 6, 1927 at Du Quoin, Ill., the son of Albert H. and Nellie R. (Dunavan) Morgan.
He married Frances Helen Henderson on Aug. 7, 1949 at Du Quoin, Ill. and she survives.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years of Du Quoin, one son - Alan D. Morgan of O'Fallon, Ill., one daughter - Julie Anne Luthy of Du Quoin, four grandchildren - Jimmy Whitley Jr., Darren Whitley, Jerrad Luthy and Jessica Luthy, three great grandchildren - Madison Whitley, Ryan Whitley and Brandon Whitley, many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews.
Tom will be sadly missed by family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers - Charles Albert Morgan and William E. Morgan, three sisters - Elizabeth Reutter, Anita Chapman and Etta Miller, sister-in-law - Julia J. Henderson, brother-in-law - George 'Red' Henderson and three nephews - Donald Chapman, Daniel Chapman and Richard Henderson.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2014 at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin with Rev. Lon McPherson officiating.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m., Monday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.
Burial will be in the Sunset Memorial Park at Du Quoin.
Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Du Quoin V.F.W. and American Legion and the U.S. Navy.
Friends may make memorials to the First United Presbyterian Church in Du Quoin and will be accepted at the funeral home.
