John H. Raney

</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[John H. Raney, age 85, of Coulterville, Ill., passed away on Sunday, April 29, 2012 at 3:20 p.m. in his home surrounded with love by his family.

John was born on April 11, 1927 in Coulterville, Ill., a son to Henry E. and Mabel B. (Dickerson) Raney. He proudly served his country for 20 years and was a veteran of the United States Navy, having served during World War II and the Korean War. On Feb. 2, 1946, he married Goldie Shadrick in Coulterville, Ill. and she preceded him in death after 55 years of marriage on Oct. 20, 2001. He married Catherine V. (Torrens) Hays on April 14, 2007 in Steeleville, Ill. and she survives. John was a member of the Coulterville Baptist Church and the Coulterville V.F.W. where he was actively involved with and founded the Military Honor Guard. In his early years, he enjoyed building and flying model airplanes, camping and waterskiing and more recently was an avid pool player, a veteran of the "Cardiac Rehab" group, Sparta, Ill. and sang with the Sparta Senior Citizen singers.

Survivors include his wife, Cathie V. Raney of Coulterville, Ill.; a son, Craig A. (Kathy) Raney of Du Quoin, Ill.; four grandchildren, John (Amanda) Raney, Joey (Bamby) Raney, Scott Raney and Jessica (Shawn) Wilken; eight great-grandchildren, Jacob, Corey, John Isaac, Jade, Rily, Cole, Michael and Abby; two stepsons; one stepdaughter; five step-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a wife, Goldie Raney; a son, Michael E. Raney and 14 brothers and sisters.

Funeral services were held at Pyatt Funeral Home, Coulterville, Ill. on Thursday, May 3, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. with Pastor Charles Ellis and Pastor Gary Sutter officiating. Interment was in Coulterville City Cemetery with military graveside rite by Coulterville V.F.W. Post #6865.

Friends called at Pyatt Funeral Home, Coulterville, Ill. on Wednesday from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and on Thursday from 8:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois or Siteman Cancer Center Luekemia Research Fund.
