Shawneetown distributes CARES funds

SHAWNEETOWN - The city of Shawneetown has been busy lately distributing CARES Act funds to local entities.

"It's the city's job to get this money to the places it needs to go," Shawneetown Mayor David Barker said.

The city used a portion of CARES Act funds, about $3,600, to pay for the construction of a wall at the Christopher Rural Health Care building in Shawneetown.

"The clinic needed the wall as a wind break so it can conduct COVID-19 tests," Barker said.

Prior to the wall's construction, outdoor COVID-19 testing was hampered by the weather on windy days. On Friday, Barker and other representatives from the city, along with personnel at the health clinic, and building owner Martin Wooden gathered for a photo in front of the new wall.

Also on Friday, Barker and Shawneetown City Treasurer Chris Mills visited next-door-neighbor Shawneetown Public Library to deliver a check for $1,000 to Librarian Trisha Scates.

Barker and Mills also stopped by the Gallatin County Food Pantry to deliver a check for $1,000 to food pantry Director Belinda Berlin.

"This certainly will be put to good use," Berlin said.
