Du Quoin council to take first look at paving Main Street after water line construction

Repaving Main Street in downtown Du Quoin will be more expensive and more complicated than it looks after construction of new water lines is completed.

First, the goal of an $800,000 sidewalk construction project later this year is to build an even sidewalk system that ends with a six-inch tall curb at the street throughout downtown. However, new Illinois Department of Transportation regulations require that the street be built with almost no crown in the center of it to comply with Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) regulations. That is going to create some engineering challenges with respect to getting the street to drain properly. The agenda for tonight's 6 p.m. city council meeting includes approving engineering costs for that work.
