Local students honored at colleges

A handful of Du Quoin and Perry County students have received scholarships and other distinctions from colleges and universities.

Recognition includes scholarships, certificates and dean's list honors.

Those with a student whose recent honors are not recognized here are encouraged to contact the Call so that their efforts can be acknowledged in the paper.

Students named to SEMO dean's list

A number of local students have been named to the fall 2017 dean's list at Southeast Missouri State University.

They include Erica Crews of Pinckneyville, Jayde Farmer of Du Quoin, Haley Johnston of Pinckneyville, Kaitlyn Sweeney of Pinckneyville, Haley Troue of Percy, Michelle VanZandt of Du Quoin and Casey Weisel of Du Quoin.

Students named to the list earned at least a 3.75 grade point average on a 4.0 scale, completed at least 12 hours of standard graded credit, achieved no grade below a B and received no failing grades in enrolled courses.

Keith graduates from Campbellsville U.

Theresa Keith of Du Quoin has received a master's in business administration from Campbellsville University in Campbellsville, Ky.

A total of 313 undergraduate and graduate students received their degrees in two commencement ceremonies Friday, Dec. 15.

It was the largest in the history of the school's December commencements.

Lacy earns SIU scholarship

Kara Lacy of Pinckneyville is the recipient of a Dean's Transfer Scholarship at SIU Carbondale for the fall 2018 semester. Scholarships are based on academic merit and potential for superior achievement in college.

Lacy has been attending Rend Lake College, where she earned president's list honors. A 2016 graduate of Pinckneyville Community High School, Lacy is the daughter of Tina and Jerry Lacy of Pinckneyville.

While in high school, she earned two bronze medals in Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) state competition and played bass clarinet in honor bands as a junior and senior. She has been a volunteer with the District 50 Parent-Teacher Organization and was involved in collecting and donating items to the Manor at Mason Woods assisted living facility.

Her activities while in high school included being involved in the school band all four years and serving as an FCCLA officer for three years. She was also involved in pep club and pep band and Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Lacy plans to major in social work at SIU Carbondale.

Fenton makes Belmont dean's list

Hope Fenton of Du Quoin qualified for the fall 2017 dean's list at Belmont University. Eligibility is based on a minimum course load of 12 hours and a quality grade point average of 3.5 with no grade below a C.

"This achievement for the fall semester indicates that these students have placed a high priority on their work at Belmont and have invested time and energy in their studies," Belmont Provost Dr. Thomas Burns said.

"It is our strong belief that consistent application in this manner will reap great benefits, which will equip them for a lifetime of learning and growing."

Kellerman receives welding certificate

Kenneth Elias Kellerman of Du Quoin was one of more than 1,200 candidates for graduation eligible to receive associate degrees, diplomas or certificates from West Kentucky Community and Technical College during commencement activities Dec. 11.

Kellerman was one of several students to receive a certificate in welding technology.

Caitlin Bradley and Kathy Barnett were the student commencement speakers. Allen North, a WKCTC alum and assistant vice president with the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, was the featured speaker.

Locals receive SEMO scholarships

A number of local students have received scholarships to attend Southeast Missouri State University for the 2018-2019 academic year.

Shania Opp of Tamaroa has received the University Scholarship and Midwest Achievement Award. Opp is the daughter of Scott and Heather Opp of Tamaroa and will be a 2018 graduate of Pinckneyville Community High School.

Hannah Porter of Pinckneyville has received the Midwest Achievement Award and Residence Life Leadership Award. Porter will be a 2018 graduate of Pinckneyville Community High School.

Tiffany Thompson of Okawville has received the University Scholarship and Residence Life Leadership Award. Thompson is the daughter of Rodney and Elizabeth Thompson of Okawville and will be a 2018 graduate of Okawville Senior High School.
