CHS froshs, sophs battle in invite

On April 4 the Chester High School Track and Field program hosted the annual Freshman/Sophomore Invitational at the Dr. Charles R. Young Memorial Track and Field Complex.

There were ten schools in competition, with Anna-Jonesboro, Columbia, Du Quoin, Freeburg, Gibault, Nashville, New Athens, Pinckneyville and Sparta joining the Yellow Jackets.

In the girl's division, the Lady Yellow Jackets fared rather well, especially considering they competed with just 10 athletes.

The girls won two events and placed in nine other events.

"We had a good time and turned in some pretty impressive performances," said Chester coach Jenny Stumpe. "This is always a good meet for the younger athletes and gives them an opportunity to compete against kids their own age."

Chester placed fourth with 60 points. A very tough Nashville squad won the meet with 158.5 points, followed by Freeburg (103), Anna-Jonesboro (69), the Lady Yellow Jackets (60) and Sparta (44) in rounding out the top five.

Chester freshman Avery Runge won the 800-meter run (2:48.0), while fellow freshman Ashtyn Jany won the 200-meter dash (29.0).
