Heroes event sports a variety of activities
Finding something to do in Sesser Sept. 23 was an easy task, even for those on a budget.
Miners Memorial Park was filled with a variety of free food and activities as part of the fourth-annual Grilling with the Heroes event sponsored by Sesser YAP and the Police and Fire departments.
"This is our fourth year and it has grown every year," said Nathan Dilliner of the Sesser Fire Department. Dilliner was handing out free hotdogs to those in attendance. "This is a just a great way to interact with the community."
The event featured live music, inflatables, face painting, water fight competitions, lawn games and rock painting.
Kelly Kelly was pleasantly surprised at the popularity of the rock painting activity sponsored by the Sesser Women's Club.
"We started with over 100," she said. With three hours still left in the event, less than two dozen rocks remained.
Benton seventh-grader Alyssa Dawson enjoyed the rock painting.
"You get to design them yourself," she said. "You can create your own thing."
Dawson said she hopes to follow her rocks to see how far they will travel.
Firefighter Leroy Carter and his daughter, Allie, were taking a break in the shade after enjoying several of the activities.
"This is a great event," Carter said. "It honors our local people in uniform, police, fire, military, and it gives people something to do."
Allie had a much simpler view.
"You get to play," the Sesser fourth-grader said.<links>
<data>
