Red Devils remain unbeaten with win over Chester
SESSER - The Sesser-Valier/Waltonville/Woodlawn Red Devils remain undefeated on the season at 6-0 after a hard-fought, take-no-prisoners, playoff-style game against visiting Chester, Friday night.
The Red Devils prevailed, 20-6, at Carroll Kelly Field.
Eli Gunter had scoring runs of 22 and 63 yards in a five-minute span from late in the first quarter through the early part of the second.
He finished the game with 175 yards rushing on 10 carriers.
Chester's lone touchdown came on the first play of the second quarter and tied the game at six.
Gunter followed with his second touchdown for a 12-6 lead.
The Red Devils missed a great chance to take a two-touchdown lead into the half, but fumbled inside the Chester 10-yard line.
The score remained 12-6 until the 2:40 mark of the fourth quarter when SVWW's Peyton Rock found a hole in the middle of the Yellow Jackets' defensive line, going 27 yards to seal the win.
"This was the most physical game we have played all season," said Red Devils head coach John Shadowens.
In fact, several players in maroon and white sustained minor injuries from the game. Eli Gunter, for example, missed the entire second half.
Rock finished the game rushing for 63 yards on 12 carriers. The Red Devil offense totaled 338 yards while holding the Yellowjackets to 225 yards.
Ethan Bert had 68 yards on eight carries to lead Chester. Quarterback Nick Meyer was 5-16 passing for 78 yards.
The Red Devils hit the road this Friday to winless Hamilton County looking for win No. 7 and chasing a home playoff game the last weekend of October.
"Hamilton County is an improving team," Shadowens said. "We can't overlook anyone at this point of the season."</group><group id="0759FC38-3A44-4CC0-8C7B-0CE0DE347D40" type="seoLabels"
