Vehicle strikes man in wheelchair
A man in a powered wheelchair escaped with only minor injuries after he was struck by a vehicle driven by a Du Quoin city commissioner Tuesday.
The Illinois State Police report that Mikel V. Wolfe, 58, of Du Quoin suffers from a medical condition that prevented him from clearly seeing the 2004 Ford driven by Charles N. Genesio II, 53, of Du Quoin. Genesio seves both on the city council and as the coordinator of emergency management for the city.
Authorities say that at around 1:33 p.m. June 6, Wolfe was eastbound on the sidewalk on the south side of East Main Street when he entered the intersection at South Oak Street without seeing Genesio's Ford.
Wolfe was transported to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Genesio was uninjured. Authorities do not anticipate any citations.
