Steeleville BOE approves officials' pay increase

Volleyball officials are set to receive a small per-game increase after a decision by the Steeleville Board of Education during its November meeting last Monday.

The board approved a $5 increase, bringing the total to $55 for two games.

"Previously, to do two games, they gof $50 and now they'll get $55," said District Superintendent Stephanie Mulholland.

The board previously increased officials' pay for high school basketball games in an effort to be financially competitive with other schools in the region.

In other news, the board set its truth in taxation hearing for 7 p.m. on Dec. 19, which is prior to its scheduled December meeting. The board also approved the employment of Sam Zimmerman as a nighttime custodian at Steeleville High School for $10 per hour.

During curriculum reports, Michelle Hamilton and Valerie Rubusch gave updates to the board on their respective classes.

"Michelle teaches P.E., so she was talking about incorporating dance into her curriculum," Mulholland said. "Valerie talked about sophomore English and teaching the Holocaust."

During informational items, the board talked about how its annual audit has not yet been filed.

"We've had an extension filed, but our auditor has been sick," Mulholland said. "We'll have it at the December meeting."

Mulholland also gave an update on the renovations to the Steeleville High School science room. She said the room is being used, but Sheldon Laboratory Systems were "dragging their feet" in completing the $380,000 project.

"Sheldon is kinda dragging their feet on the case work and some other things," Mulholland said. "We're using the room, but there's some things that need to be wrapped up."

The project was expected to be complete prior to the first day of school in August. The Chester District 139 Board of Education has also employed Sheldon for the renovations to its science rooms and has experienced similar delays.

Mulholland also reported that the streetlights in the Steeleville High School parking lot have been replaced with LED bulbs at a cost of around $21,000. The district took advantage of a "lighting incentive" from Lighting Associates to help pay for the cost of the project.

"Now we have lights that work and should work until I retire," Mulholland said.
