DQHS Scholastic Bowlers are regional champs; as season ends abruptly
The Du Quoin High School Scholastic Bowl team continued its march to the state finals, by winning the Cobden regional on Monday. Unfortunately, the IHSA has cancelled both Saturday's sectionals and the March 20 state finals, so this could be the end of the road.
The IHSA announced late Thursday that all winter sports finals have been canceled, the worst news of all to a Du Quoin team that caught lightning in a bottle this season. Their brilliant preparation and play all but destined them for the Class 1A state finals.
Team co-Coach Zach Jones said Friday he hopes that the IHSA will allow the finals to be played eventually, and will agree to merely postpone them until the coronavirus pandemic dissipates.
The IHSA first announced on Thursday that the finals would go on, but without fans. The full cancelation was announced a few hours later.
Du Quoin took 10 students to the regionals and everybody got into the competition, Jones said.
The Indians were seeded #1 going into the Saturday sectionals at Johnston City High School.
