WEEKEND: Things to Do

SCRUB SALE

Chester Memorial Hospital will host a scrub sale on Friday, Sept. 30, and Saturday, Oct. 1, to benefit one of its own.

Beverly Vanover has been a staff member at the hospital for 36 years and was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2015.

After chemotherapy and radiation treatment during the past year, she was finally able to return to work in March only to suffer another setback. She is now paralyzed from the chest down after another medical crisis.

Memorial Hospital staff has been conducting small fundraisers for Vanover, including bake sales, silent auctions and T-shirts.

The hospital has recently adopted a dress code which specifies that employees wear specific colors and brands of scrubs per department and the staff is using the opportunity to hold a scrub sale.

The staff is donating all of their used/gently used (and even some new without tags) scrubs. All of the money raised from the sale will be used to help make Vanover's home wheelchair accessible.

The sale will take place Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. All scrubs are $2 each with sizes extra small on up.

On Saturday from noon to 4 p.m., everything you can fit in a Walmart-type bag is $5. Due to weather, the sale will be held in the basement conference room on both Friday and Saturday.

CEMETERY TOUR

The Friends of the Steeleville Area Public Library are sponsoring a tour of the Steeleville City Cemetery on Sunday, October 2, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The last tour will leave the staging area at 4 p.m. Parking will be available in the American Legion parking lot and exhibit and refreshment tables will be set up behind the Legion adjacent to the cemetery.

The tour will feature 10 portrayals of individuals who were early settlers, founders, and other interesting individuals who resided in Steeleville.

Those portrayed include a Revolutionary War soldier who was a prisoner of war, both Union and Confederate Civil War soldiers, the founder of Steeleville, one of the first Methodist ministers, an English sea captain and his wife, an early physician, the owners of Steeleville's first general merchandise store, the city's first library director and the Wilson Mausoleum.

It is a walking tour should take slightly over an hour to complete.

There is no charge for the tour; however donations will be appreciated. It is a wonderful opportunity to learn about the people who were responsible for settling, building, and improving the village of Steeleville.

Prior to the cemetery tour, the Village of Steeleville and descendants of Steeleville's founder, George Steele, will dedicate a memorial erected in Steele's honor.

The dedication ceremony begins at 1 p.m.
