S'ville gets off to rough start at Trico Tournament

Monday's three-set loss to Valmeyer appeared to have an effect on the Steeleville Lady Warriors during Tuesday's opening night of the three-day, round robin Trico Tournament.

Steeleville (8-5) gave Cobden a five-point head start in the first set and fell behind 10-4 in the second in a 21-14, 21-17 sweep by the Appleknockers.

Individual statistics were not available as of press time Wednesday.

"They were tired," said Steeleville coach Lesley Wente. "We got back late from Valmeyer."

An ace from Cobden's Inna Kinsey gave the Appleknockers an 8-1 advantage in the first set, with Cobden eventually forcing a Steeleville timeout by taking a 10-3 lead in the race to 21.

After the timeout, the Appleknockers continued to press their advantage in expanding the lead to 15-4. Steeleville rallied late, but Cobden's lead was too much to overcome.

The Lady Warriors showed a little more life in the second set, rallying to pull within two points at 11-9. But a four-point flurry from Cobden gave the Appleknockers a six-point advantage.

Steeleville still had some fight left, getting to within three at 15-12. But the Lady Warriors were unable to capture the set's momentum.

After defeating the Warriors, Cobden went on to fall to Chester in three sets, 21-15, 23-25, 15-8. The Lady Yellow Jackets went on to defeat Trico (21-12, 21-16) late Tuesday to improve to 11-1 on the season.

In other tournament action, Sparta defeated Marissa-Coulterville (11-21, 21-16, 15-9) and Trico also defeated the Lady Meteors 19-21, 21-17, 15-6.

The tournament continues tonight with matches beginning at 5 p.m. with Chester taking on Sparta.

Sparta will then turn around and face Cobden, with Cobden taking on Trico in the match after that.

Steeleville is also scheduled to play two matches - first against Trico and then against Marissa-Coulterville to end the night.

The tournament concludes Thursday with Cobden facing Marissa at 5 p.m. Other matches are Marissa-Coulterville vs. Chester, Chester vs. Steeleville, Steeleville vs. Sparta and Sparta vs. Trico.
