CHS Band to debut 2016 field show

Football season is upon us at Chester High School and that means it is time for the introduction of yet another brand new field show from the Marching Yellow Jackets.

CHS Band Director Steve Colonel and the band have been busy preparing for the first performance of the season at this week's home football game.

Chester will host Hamilton County on Friday at 7 p.m. and the Marching Yellow Jackets will take the field at approximately 6:30 p.m. for the pre-game show.

This year's field show is titled "The Music of Fall Out Boy" and will feature some of Fall Out Boy's most popular rock-and-roll hits

The music repertoire will include "My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark," "Centuries," "Uma Thurman" and "American Beauty/American Psycho."

The 2016 edition of the Marching Yellow Jackets includes approximately 70 wind instruments and 10 percussion instruments for about a total of 80 band members.

The CHS Dance Team is also considered a unit in the field show band.

The Dance Team consists of seniors Lindsey Schroeder and McKenzie Shinabarger; juniors Bailey Misuraca, Alyse Vasquez, Jocelyn Abernathy, Autumn Cushman, Hanna Bert, Tayler Howie, and Emma Naeger; sophomores Abbey Bauer, Sylena Martin, and Stevie Gilbert and freshmen Kayla Bert, Maddie Hasemeyer, Avery Runge, Mallary Vasquez, Lauren Vasquez, Ryn Petrowske, and Jocelyn Landeros.

The Dance Team is coached by Barb Misuraca and Adrianne Brockmeyer.

The entire band attended the CHS Band Camp the week of August 1-3. Daily, the group worked indoors on music preparation and went to the practice field when it wasn't raining to work on the various aspects of marching the field show.

"Highlights of the camp included the fact that we got the first three songs on the field and the kids were marching those three songs fairly cleanly," Colonel said. "The first day the camp was spent indoors all day due to rain.

"On that day we worked hard on learning all of the music for both the show and the pre-game."

Colonel noted that the students were excited throughout the three-day camp and that they did a great job of learning the show

"Some of the kids were marching on a football field for the first time," he said. "It was Greek to them, but they all did a wonderful job of adjusting to marching on a football field."

The 2016 drum major is Steven Ehlers. Ehlers will handle the field directing for the band and act as the "man in charge" on the field throughout the football season.

The drum major is also responsible for directing the band in all parades. He will further assist Colonel in the band room during some class activities.

Colonel also noted that the Chester Music Patrons will have hot food, candy, hot popcorn and a wide variety of drinks at each home game.

The Patrons man the concession stand on both the visitor's side of the field and in the big stand on Chester's home side.
