Fatal fight at Bernasek's

A fight at Bernasek's Bar and Grill early Wednesday morning resulted in fatal injuries to an Ellis Grove man.

According to Chester Police Chief Ryan Coffey, CPD officers were called to the business on Buena Vista Hill (501 E. Buena Vista St.) at 12:17 a.m. on the report of a fight in progress.

Upon arrival, police secured the scene and identified the involved parties. One individual, identified by Randolph County Coroner Randy Dudenbostel as 26-year-old Chester resident Timothy J. Michael, was taken to Chester Memorial Hospital with injuries.

Dudenbostel told the Herald Tribune that Michael suffered "multiple" stab wounds in the altercation and was pronounced dead at 1 a.m.

The other individual, a 26-year-old male, was taken to Randolph County Jail. Coffey told the newspaper his name will not be released until he is officially charged by Randolph County State's Attorney Jeremy Walker.

Walker's office told the Herald Tribune he was in court Wednesday morning on a jury docket and would be unavailable until mid-afternoon. Charges have yet to be filed.

The Chester Fire Department was paged out at 3:48 a.m. to aid in the investigation.

"We conducted a search looking for a weapon," said CFD Chief Marty Bert. "That's all our purpose was.

"Where was it located was in the woods. They just didn't have enough manpower to search for it."

Bert said CFD firefighters were on scene for about an hour and a half.

The Herald Tribune will have further details on the incident as they become available.

Two hours later, at 5:52 a.m., CFD firefighters were called to the report of a vehicle fire on Route 3 near the Jackson County line.

Bert said the incident actually took place two miles inside Jackson County

"There was a lady driving down the road and the car wasn't doing too well," he said. "The exhaust was hot and caught something in the back on fire.

"They called 911 and were able to put some water on it and knock (the fire) down and we finished it off when we arrived."

Bert said firefighters were on-scene for about 20 minutes and he believes the car is fixable. It turned out to not be the only damaged vehicle as a radiator hose blew off one of the fire trucks en route to the scene.

"We had a radiator hose blow off on the way down there. I just called the tow truck and had them towed back up here."
