According to the Illinois State Police, 44-year-old Courtney R. Carter was driving a 2012 Honda south on Shawneetown Trail when he failed to stop at the stop sign at Route 150.
The Honda then went across the highway and struck a culvert, totaling the vehicle.
Carter was uninjured in the accident, but his passenger - Amanda J. Reeves - received "incapacitating" injuries.
Reeves was transported via MedStar Ambulance to Sparta Community Hospital, where she was later airlifted to St. Louis University Hospital, according to Steeleville Fire Chief Carlos Barbour.
Carter was cited for disregarding a stop sign, with the Honda towed from the scene due to damage.
"His condition was normal and BAC test was not offered," said Illinois State Police Trooper Christopher "Joey" Watson. "So, (officers) did not expect alcohol was a factor. The investigation is closed."
The Steeleville fire and police departments also responded to the accident, which was reported at 11:25 p.m. Steeleville firefighters cleared the scene an hour later.
