Wolff warning citizens of Mystery Shopper scam
Randolph County Sheriff Shannon Wolff is warning the citizens of Randolph County and adjacent areas of a current scam his office is receiving information on.
In this scam, individuals that have signed up online to participate in the Mystery Shopper program will receive a letter and a U.S. postal Money order asking to them to help evaluate Western Union's services.
The letter will tell the victim to go to the bank and cash the money order. You will then be instructed to keep some of the money for your service and use Western Union to wire the remaining money to a person that is listed on the letter.
Once you have cashed the check and wired the money, you will then find out from the bank that the money order was counterfeit.
You will then be required pay the money back to the bank and you will be out the total amount that was on the money order.
The most current scam the sheriff's office has opened a case on involved a money order for $975 dollars and the person was told to keep $180. The money order and letter were very convincing and appeared to be real.
Attached is a picture of the Mystery Shopper letter and the counterfeit money order.
There are legitimate Mystery Shopper sites, however you must be careful and make sure to verify the money order is real.
To verify the money order please contact the United States Postal Service at 866-459-7822.
