Du Quoin School Board to get to new DHS basketball coach starting in May
The Du Quoin Board of Education met Thursday in regular session, rehiring administrators Matt Hickam and Jeff Gossett at the Du Quoin High School and Aaron Hill at the Du Quoin Middle.
The board usually divides those evaluations and hirings and will consider the continued employment of Supt. Dr. Gary Kelly, elementary principal Diana Rea and business manager Cory Robbins in the next round.
The board accepted the resignation of 8th grade middle school boys basketball coach Ryan Heape, 7th grade girls basketball coach Chuck Montgomery and Du Quoin High School cheerleading sponsor Pam Pursell.
The work of reassigning staff under the budget deficit reduction program is ongoing. The board re-employed the district's support staff for the coming year
Dr. Gary Kelly said the board has not yet taken up the issue of hiring a Du Quoin High School head basketball coach to replace Wendell Wheeler, who has resigned. He said that discussion could come up on the May agenda.
The school board amended the 2014-2015 school calendar with Wednesday, May 27 being the last day of student attendance and Thursday, May 28 being a teacher's institute day.
The board approved the middle school promotion ceremony for Friday, May 22 and the high school graduation for Saturday, May 23 with both events being held at the Du Quoin State Fairgrounds grandstand.
The board approved the renewal of COPE and Project SOAR Alternative School agreements with the Regional Office of Education.
The board approved dates for the annual Fellowship of Christian Athletes middle school camp.
The board adopted a resolution to abate property taxes relative to the series 2010A bonds following voter approval last week of the 1% countywide sales tax. Real estate tax abatement is one of the uses of that money.

The board approved the annual application to the ISBA for the summer lunch program and planning continues for summer school.
