Random acts of Kindness
A special event has been set up to celebrate the kindness of Abby Liefer and Hannah Porter, who were fatally injured in a traffic accident on Route 159 on Jan. 10.
"Abby and Hannah's Random Act of Kindness" seeks to mark the one-month anniversary of their deaths by encouraging others to take part in a single act of kindness, no matter how small, on Feb. 10.
More than 1,400 people signed up to participate on the Facebook listing for the event as of Tuesday afternoon.
"Do it in their name and memory so we can keep their spirits alive," wrote event host Alison Schubert, who is one of Liefer's sisters.
Brandy Muertz, who is Liefer's other sister, came up with the idea to do Acts of Kindness.
"Brandy came up with the idea to do a random act of kindness in her sister's name from time-to-time, especially around Abby's birthday," said Terri Liefer, Abby's mother, in a Facebook message. "She made cards to attach to the acts of kindness in Abby's name and also Hannah's.
"Alison took it a step further and made it a Facebook event."
For more information, or to find out how to get copies of the cards, email Brandy Muertz at brandy9109@gmail.com.
Images of the cards, suitable for clipping, will be included in the Feb. 4 print edition of the Herald Tribune.
Porter was a 2013 graduate of Red Bud High School. She taught fitness classes at the Randolph County YMCA and also worked at Southwestern Illinois College's Red Bud campus. Liefer was a student at SWIC and worked at the YMCA.
Porter, 20, and Liefer, 19, were fatally injured when their Chevrolet Cobalt was hit head-on by a Chevrolet Aveo driven by Crystal Steinheimer. Liefer was driving, while Porter was in the backseat.
