Did you feel it?

The U.S. Geological Survey says there was an earthquake in Southern Illinois on Monday night, just as folks were headed to bed after the 10 o'clock news.

The 2.3 magnitude quake recorded at 10:46 p.m. was centered around Christopher, in Franklin County.

The area is part of the Illinois Basin - Ozark Dome Region, which borders the New Madrid Fault area.

The USGS says minor earthquakes are felt in this region once or twice per year, with a major earthquake happened every 10 to 20 years.

The largest earthquake in the Ozark Dome Region was a 5.4 magnitude quake, which was felt throughout Southern Illinois in 1968.

A 2.3 on the Richter scale is just above the threshold of shaking that the USGS says can be felt by people. Anything below a 2.0 is considered a "micro-earthquake" that is detected by devices but not typically felt by anyone on the surface.
