Perry County Board of Commissioners to hold Truth in Taxation hearing Nov.28

Illinois statute requires that any time a school district, city or county government raises its real estate tax levy by more than five percent, that action requires a public hearing called a "Truth in Taxation" hearing.

Perry County government, cities and schools face a tough Fiscal 2015. To that end, Perry County wants to raise the amount of the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (pension levy) from $600,000 last year to $700,000 this year, an increase of 14.3 percent.

Similarly, the county is wanting to raise its general county property tax levy from $1,967,000 to $2,129,000, an increase of 7.7 percent.

The public will have a chance to comment on these proposed increases during a special hearing at 9 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 28 in the board room at the county government building on Rt. 13-127 south of Pinckneyville.

That will be followed by a special meeting of the Perry County Commissioners at 10 a.m. that same morning. The agenda includes approving the 2015 county budget and appropriations and the 2015 unit road district budget and appropriations as well as insurance matters.
