Kabat given another 30 days to tear down collapsed former lumber company building

The Tamaroa Village Board granted Butch Kabat another 30 days to finish cleaning up the collapsed building on Route 51 which used to be the Lumber Company.

Kabat told the board he got started on the project last weekend and it will take more time to completely remove the building.

Village Attorney Jordan Campanella said Kabat's attorney had been in touch with his office. He said the request for additional time is reasonable.

Kabat told the board he had hoped to repair the building, but was unable to do so due to his health.

In other business, the board:

• clarified that a no parking sign was moved on the south side of First South Street. A village ordinance sets a no parking area around every intersection in town. The curb in the no parking zone is painted yellow. On the north side of the road there will be no parking from the alley west to the intersection in the block between Walnut and Chestnut Streets. A sign will be erected and the curb painted there, as well.

• authorized employee Chuck Zoeckler to purchase 20 tons of salt at an estimated $120 per ton. The village has a sufficient supply of cinders.

• discussed the ongoing problem with the toilets at the Community Center. In October, the board approved the purchase of three pressure flush toilets and two hand dryers for the outside restrooms. However, the pressure flush toilets cannot work without a one-inch water line running to the bathroom. Trustee Bill Place said he will contact Climate Solutions about alternatives.

• discussed the need for a new locking mechanism on the door to the middle of the Community Center. The door locks on one side and not the other. OSHA requires that the door be able to be opened in case of fire.

• discussed the need to measure the pavilion so that Trustee Lisa Haycraft can get a bid for a metal roof.

• discussed the need to reattach the gutters on the Community Center before bad weather hits.

• examined a bid from Bob Kunkel to upgrade the lighting in the Community Center. The bid said new fixtures cost $7,022 and Ameren would offer a rebate of $4,097, making the actual cost $2,925 for all new fixtures. The board determined they would replace only certain fixtures which will bring the greatest cost savings.

• heard from Campanella the only way to ban smoking in the city park is to pass on ordinance to that effect. He also said that he needs a copy of the water line loan so he may read it before approving documents sent to the village by USDA.

• Trustee Kerri Koenegstein passed out t-shirts to the board. The shirts were a thank you gift from Tamaroa Grade School for lowering the cost of leasing the Community Center.

• heard from Haycraft that the last blood drive for Tamaroa in 2014 will be Sunday, Nov. 30 from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Community Center.
