Harrison recognized as 2018 literacy volunteer

Key education of the Alpha Kappa chapter of Delta Gamma Society recognized Carol Harrison of Chester as outstanding literacy volunteer for 2018.

The organization promotes the professional an d personal growth of women educators and excellent in education. Members are from Jackson, Williamson, Perry, Randolph and Franklin counties.

Harrison is a retired teacher from Chicago. She has been with the literacy program since 2008. Some of her students were Spanish speakers, but most of the time she has worked with Ming Xu, the owner of the Asia Garden in Chester. She has helped her not only with English but in settling two boys from China, buying a house, and getting a liquor license for her business. Ming calls her "her American mothers."

The ROE (Randolph-Monroe Regional Office of Education) literacy program is made possible by a grant awarded by the Illinois State Library under Jesse White.

Volunteer tutors work with adults seventeen and older, who are no longer in school and read below a 9th grade level and are also below the 9th grade level in math. Tutors also help with English language skills. This program has been offered for thirty-five years.
