Carbondale police, sheriff's department fully involved in Du Quoin hold-up investigation

Du Quoin Chief of Police Jamie Ellermeyer said Monday a sophisticated surveillance system at the Shell gas mart in Du Quoin and the attendant's recall ability went a long way in finding and arresting one suspect in the case.

Two others remain at large as investigators connect the dots between suspect Jeremy Shered, 26, of Centralia and Carbondale, and the other two men.

Du Quoin Chief of Police Jamie Ellermeyer said evidence at the scene led police to Shered.

Chief Ellermeyer said Carbondale police are involved for two reasons: 1.) They assisted in finding Shered , and 2.) they are continuing their own investigation of an armed robbery at a Casey's General Store and want to determine if there are any common suspects.

Three male subjects entered the gas mart at the corner of West Main and Hickory streets Du Quoin at about 2:05 p.m. Friday and approached the station attendant from behind.

The men displayed a handgun and demanded money from the cash register.

The suspect struck the attendant with the handgun, causing injury. All three suspects left the area on foot.

The pistol-whipped employee has taken a few days off to recover, but was very helpful as police began their investigation.

Shered was arrested in Carbondale for armed robbery (accountability), according to a release issued by the Du Quoin Police Department.

Chief Ellermeyer said he appreciated the hard work of Du Quoin investigator Steve Ingram and Sheriff's Department investigators Tim Russell and Steve Behm.
