Pinckneyville City Council approves purchase of new UV unit for sewer plant
The Pinckneyville City Council approved the purchase of a new ultraviolet sanitation system for the east sewer treatment plant, which serves the Pinckneyville Correctional Center and various businesses on that end of town. The base cost for the unit is approximately $110,000 and construction costs could run as high as $20,000.
The vertical UV unit currently installed is obsolete. The city has been cannibalizing one of the modules to keep the other two running, but has now run out of parts. Also, the bulbs used in the old unit are no longer available.
The new system will be horizontal and installation includes pouring concrete and electrical work.
The UV system functions only from May 1 to Oct. 31 each year. The new unit should be in by the third week in April, allowing time for installation. During the construction, waste will have to be pumped around the UV unit.
In other business, the council:
• placed on file for public inspection three-year collective bargaining agreement with the Laborers' International Union of North America, the Southern and Central Illinois Laborers' District Council and Laborers' Local 773. The contract guarantees a $.50 per hour raise each year.
• approved a request from the Pinckneyville Eagles for $25,000 from the Business District Fund to partially fund a major renovation. The Eagles have already replaced the roof on their building. The remainder of the work includes refinishing the floors, moving the bar and installing gambling machines. Sam Robb, representing the Eagles, said he anticipates the entire project will be complete by the end of the month.
• approved a donation of $500 from the hotel/motel tax fund for advertising the sixth annual Automotive Swap Meet to be held at the City Park on Feb. 23.
• granted permission for TLC of Southern and Central Illinois Inc. to collect funds at the four-way stop and locations around the square on Saturday, May 3. This will be the 20th year of fund-raising to benefit local challenged and disabled children.
• granted permission for the Knights of Columbus to have an outside band on May 31 from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m. during a Wounded Warrior benefit.
