Police wrestle with car break-ins

Du Quoin police are asking residents in the West Main, West Park and North Division Street areas to be vigilant as they deal with a handful of vehicle break-ins there in recent days.

No suspects have been arrested as Du Quoin Chief of Police Jamie Ellermeyer asks all residents of the city to pull your cars up close to the house, remove any valuable belongings like money, billfolds, purses and personal electronics from the seats and cup holders. "We've had five or six," he said.

Keeping your car, truck or SUV in a lighted area is helpful.

Pay attention to car doors opening and closing and to barking dogs.

If you see or hear anything suspicious, please call the Du Quoin Police Department at 542-2131.

Police say pilferage in unlocked vehicles is not a chronic problem, but surfaces periodically and your help in solving this problem will be greatly appreciated.
