Lack of insurance creates hardship after fatal accident

Three months after the March 15, 2013 accident that claimed the lives of two children, the mother of two in the other vehicle who was struck head-on on Rt. 152 west of Du Quoin continues her recovery.

Kierra Davis and her two children survived the accident after they were hit head-on by a car driven by Amber Rucks, 23, of Du Quoin.

At the time, Kierra was about to start a new job. Because of the accident she lost that opportunity. Her doctor has not released her so she can find work.

Medical bills are piling up. She was evicted and now living with a mother-in-law. She has no car. There was only liability insurance on her car and she says there was no insurance on the Rucks vehicle.

One child who had seat belt burns from the accident has fully recovered. Another in a car seat was not injured.

Kierra had multiple surgeries and will fully recover, but any money she had is gone.

A fund has been set up at the Du Quoin State Bank to help. You can send or drop off a contribution at the bank made out to the Kierra Davis Medical Fund.

Police say Rucks was driving a 2002 Suzuki XL7 SUV westbound on Illinois Rt. 152 one-quarter mile west of the Sacred Heart Cemetery Road. She apparently lost control of her car, which crossed the center line and struck Davis' 1993 Audi 100 head-on. Rucks was an employee of the Pinckneyville Mc Donald's and remains in a Chicago-area rehabilitation facility. She is up and walking. Her speech is returning as she communicates with friends and family. Recovery is slow. A medical fund for Amber was set up at the First National Bank of Sparta.
